Green Initiatives

Beyond Monumental is committed to making our races sustainable for our local community. Beyond Monumental and our partners have held a long-time dedication to recycling, reusing, and reducing trash from our events. In addition to the steps we take to reduce the footprint of our events, we are committed to reducing printing and increasing our year-round sustainability efforts.

We succeeded in keeping 2,850 pounds of event waste out of the landfill via recycling, composting, and donating. From the Monumental Health & Fitness Expo and our downtown footprint at the Start Line, Finish Line, and Post Race Celebration, we recycled, composted, or donated 40.3% of the waste. This result significantly exceeds the nationwide recycling & composting rate of 32.1%.

We’re thrilled that the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon reflects Beyond Monumental’s care for the environment. Thank you to Littler for supporting our Green Team and helping us tread more lightly on our planet!

Green Initiatives

At Beyond Monumental, we strive each year to improve our events for our participants and the planet. Our waste diversion efforts at the Monumental Health & Fitness Expo and CNO Financial Indianapolis Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K included:

  • We collected and recycled 579 pounds of cardboard from the Monumental Health & Fitness Expo.
  • Two on-course aid stations (stations H and R) with all compostable supplies.
  • All Nuun Hydration stations have compostable cups.
  • The finish line Nuun Hydration and water station have compostable cups.
  • The finish line area and Post Race Celebration have thirty co-located stations (compost, recycling, landfill, liquids) with volunteers monitoring and refilling bags.
  • Six receptacles in the finish line area and Post Race Celebration to collect heat sheets for recycling.

Green Initiatives

In addition to the initiatives above, Beyond Monumental also takes steps to reuse and recycle used and extra racing materials:

  • In 2022, we recycled 1,746 pounds of race medals.
  • Used heat sheets are recycled and made into sustainable benches.
  • Unused food from the course and the finish line is donated to local food pantry organizations.
  • 775 pounds of discarded clothing was collected at the Start Line and donated to a local charity.
  • Additional clothing discarded along the course was also donated to local organizations.
  • Donate gently used running shoes to local organizations.
