Don Carr added, “The half marathon and marathon courses follow the same route until approximately mile 7. Runners in the half marathon are welcome to join the pace groups and run along with them until the two courses diverge.”
The pace team leaders will staff a booth at the packet pick-up expo. Runners are encouraged to stop by to meet the pacers, sign-up for a pace group, ask questions and get last minute tips and advice if wanted. There is no cost to run along with a pace group and advance sign-up is not required, although it is encouraged. A map of the start line will be posted at the pacers’ booth indicating where each pace team leader will be located race morning for the start of the event. Generally, the pace group leaders will line up in the start corrals in the area posted for the pace at which the group intends to run the marathon. Look for the pacers at the expo, on the start line and on the course.

Music, headphones and the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon
INDIANAPOLIS – Runners and walkers participating in the 2009 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon (IMM) WILL be allowed to wear headphones during the race if they desire.
The USA Track & Field (USATF) has recently amended rule 144.3(f) effectively lifting its previously imposed ban on headphones and other music devices. USATF is the governing body for long distance running events in the United States.
Don Carr, Race Director of the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, stated, “The safety of our runners, walkers and volunteers will always be a priority at the IMM. We encourage runners and walkers to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere without headphones. The support from the volunteers, spectators and bands along the IMM course is fantastic!”
Carlton Ray, President of the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, stated, “There are multiple opinions on this issue but we understand why a number of runners and walkers are personally motivated by listening to music.”
The 2009 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon will be held on November 7. The start and finish lines are near the Indiana State Capitol Building in downtown Indianapolis and the course highlights a number of beautiful features, monuments buildings and neighborhoods in Indianapolis.
